A Beautiful Revelation -- the Epic MZ-RH1 Arrives

As long as they offer the right features, who cares if they only offer 1 model??? I would rather they spend time on R&D and get it right than offer a bunch that only do 1/2 the job ...

As long as they make more the 1, we can all get 1 and everything will be okay :ok:

Other than the battery options, I am impressed and very interested!

Ok, I was a little fast with that sarcastic reply.

I would like to see both a Hi-MD deck and a car unit. I would buy both in a heartbeat (about as fast as that last reply ;) )

Because almost all recordings made via USB on a NetMD unit are copyrighted songs (CD-rips or mp3's). Because with legacy-MD recordings there is not enough copyright-info in the track to know what source it came from the selection is a bit crude.

Gah. You know, I upload my radio shows to MD as backups. It'd be nice if Sony finally got over it and allowed us to use our MDs the way they should be used. Portable media. Not locked down DRM devices.

I want to upload my show (sure, transcode it from WAV to ATRAC) and be able to download it again and convert it back to WAV. I'd like to be able to do this with 8 years of my recordings from SP to NetMD to HiMD.

From my perspective there's nothing here. I'll stick with my MZ-RH10.

What a day!!!

First, after years of feeling like a looser on that matter, a stock I was holding finally superseded the price I'd acquired it for.

And then, while still thinking what to do with the earnings now, Kurisu's broadcast about this new HiMD-unit dropped into my mailbox...

I begin to believe, that really nothing in this world happens by accident and without a reason...

Cheers - Killroy.

What about the cradle? Is there one at all? If yes, will the cradle connect to PC? Will we need the cradle to charge as with the NH1 (in addition to charging via USB)?

Where is the USB port on it? The pics don't show...

Looks like the USB port is on the unit itself, see Post #20's pictures.

There is no cradle for the RH1.

The USB port is located at the right side of the unit. Not the best picture but you get the idea:

Let's hope those battery life numbers are some approximation of reality. They claim 9 hours of Hi-SP recording. That leaves very little margin of error on recording a 1GB disc.

So it will definitely mean getting an extra battery and keeping it charged. Or somehow finding a higher-capacity battery that fits the slot.

If they're aiming this in any way at the pro market, or at anyone else who is depending on the unit to make a crucial live recording, then not having an external battery attachment is extremely stupid.

What a waste of time making the RM-MC40ELK, if it;s only for use on pre HD5 sony audio devices. They should have made the 40elk the remote of choice for this thing.

I am glad that I have bought a spare one. I was thinking of selling it, since my son didnt want to use it with his NW-HD1. Now it is time to unwrap it.

Interesting that for a format which so many have written off, there are, at the time of me writing this, 171 people reading this thread.

I just hope someone from Sony is also looking in the see the amount of interest. (Just in case they are: Where is my ******* Hi-MD Deck? :P )

I hope they read... how many times we have asked for a Hi-MD deck.

I actaully prefer the li ion battery. They have a longer lifespan compared to NIMH gumsticks, give you more acurate details on how much battery life if left (NH1 tells you how many hours are left) and do not suffer from the memory effect, so can be charged when they are half full. They can also be rapid charged in an hour. I would rather have a couple of li-ion batteries in my pocket than shelling out for high capacity AA batteries which take longer to recharge in a seperate recharger. Just my two cents on the issue, RH1 seems perfect for my needs!

NH1 dimensions:

81.7w x 14.8d x 76.1h mm, 107g w/10g batt

RH1 dimesions:

87.7×17.3×87.7mm 106g (including battery)

So I guess it's a bit bigger...If they don't give us retainable recording settings, this unit is not much friendlier for stealth recording. I really hope we don't have to reset levels everytime. But if we do, I'll still probably get one to upload legacy recordings and trip out on that cool blue display.

We all know how Sony tends to bump those numbers up just a touch

I was feeling bummed about that battery option as well. I did a quick search on eBay and found many available from China for under $20 including the shipping cost. Having 2 will be a requirement. I guess I can always keep my RH10 handy with it's NiMh at the music festivals, etc.

eBay search for LIP-4WM

That is the nicest news I have heard for some time. I am going to buy 2 of these. 2 Black ones, in case Sony is really decisive on ending the MD format. I have more than 200 MD's recorded in SP with my old MDS-JA50ES... now I will be able to upload them to my PC! Now I am really sorry that I had deleted some of my SP's to record MDLP. That is a dream come true. Thanx Sony! I remember the days I had to use SCMS stripper. Was it SCMS? Anyway serial copy I mean...

With all that enthusiasm, and those new features I think MD has a future. Too many people may start using it. Why do you think Sony changed its mind? Maybe because NW series HD players and Connect software sucked? I am going to start stocking more 1GB discs.

I am happy now!

wow. sexiness. but only 1 model? is this bad news for the future of Minidisc? i remember a few months ago on the forums that the future of Minidisc was in question, since Sony was scaling back some product lines and refocusing its business. So it's good news that they are still developing new models...but bad that it's only 1 new one this year? sorry, i've been absent from the forums for awhile...so maybe all this has been answered before!

Mmm.. Sony might be hitting the right spot. The design and quality reminds me of the super popular Walkman The WM-DD33, which I still have, kicking and alive. Just promote this very unit like the Walkman in the 80-90's, make sure drag 'n drop possibility and ofcourse affordable (max. 250 euro) and I'm pretty sure (Hi-)MD will be revived. Bashing all the flash, even the Ipods.

Totally Agree!

Now I need a HiMD deck and car audio with implement FLAC, kudasai m(_ _)m

I'll probably get one for:

a ) An upgrade to my MZ-NH1. My MZ-NH1 is nice as a player - and it'll probably stay at work if I get one of the 3rd gen units. So all I'll have to do is carry the discs I want to listen to around as I travel to/from work.

b ) To upload those radio recordings ive made on my NetMD deck. I can't be bothered to record in real-time uaing my own program  . (I have tested my own program's real-time recording, and have a few radio tracks "uploaded" this way)

c ) To see what additional things I can add to HIMDRenderer for support for this device...

Although I'll probably have to wait at least 6 months to buy one from the UK (I have no credit card...)

I agree that it's good they're keeping it simple. Sometimes having too many options in a product line can be dangerous and scares people away. One device, one price. Easy to understand. It also confuses the sales people at stores. Of course, I doubt any Sony store rep will understand how wonderful this device is, but we can hope.

The design is definitely strong. Very sleek and straightforward IMO, even if it's a little bigger than the NH1. I'm glad it has a standard mini-USB port as well.

By allowing std-MD uploads with this device, they've basically revived the entire product line of recorders, decks, etc. out there to become even more useful! I don't HAVE to use Hi-MD to upload audio to my PC. I can use my Sharp SG-11 bookshelf system to record and upload with the RH1. Most excellent move!

I'm interested to see how Sony USA's press release will read and how they will market this device.

Just to say this is a great piece of news - Marck actually asked me to go with him to Sony NL tomorrow but I can't as I'm stuck in London.. but hopefully he can glean plenty of info from the guys at Sony and maybe get a unit for a few days to review.

So that means all of your old SP and MDLP live recordings can finally be uploaded via USB! For example, an SP mode track uploaded to Sonicstage 3.4 will be converted to PCM or Hi-SP (your choice)

This is great news.. especially after some time looking on ebay for a HI-MD with Mac compatibility with an extra microphone I didn't really need (and that never came to Europe).

This unit seems to be great and expectedly to get a fairer price.

Now for the questions...

>Is that really an optical line out? (because there are so few portable units to have it, I find it hard to believe..)

>Is the price in Europe expected to be the equivalent for the expected price in the US, or is it going to be a bit higher?

Anyway.. I'll be wanting one of these. And it comes out the very month of my birthday ^_^

karaok - I don't see any mention of an optical line out!

doclloyd - Spot on with the comment about bringing old equipment back to life! I have an SD-SG11 too and now that I can upload I'll be keeping it happily! :)

I just bought an RH10 (from the classifieds) and will probably be a while before I can buy this one though!!

Any Engadget readers out there? Ryan Block is getting a lot of flak for his comments today!
