converting from ogg to wav then to atrac is easy. the problem is that the artist/album information will be lost from converting ogg to wav. so i have to edit them again once they are converted to sonic stage.

Maybe THEY are listening and someday a news entry on minidisc.org says: "Sony provides support of OGG, FLAC, MPC and others."

Maybe it was a bad idea to "free" old MDs, now everyone wants more! ;)

¿May i ask about the language compatibilities? ¿English menus form a japanese hardware? I see it many times in electronics like psp, wich have the system interface in multilanguage. ¿Can i expect compatibilities issues using JAP MD and Euro PCs?

All the Japanese Hi-MD units to date have had the option to switch the menus to english on the units themselves and you can easily run SS in english alongside this if you want so we don't expect this to be an issue on the RH1 either.

Have seen a simple review of the MZ-RH1 and it quotes this!!

http://www.dlmag.com/1040/sony-s-new-mz-rh1-mp3-player.html

As prices have not yet been set, the play should cost around the same as an iPod nano, and with al the great features it may actually be even better. The release date is announced for around May of this year, mostly across Europe. With a battery life lasting for about 19 hours on one charge, and with an external memory slot with support up to 2GB, its everything anyone would ever want from a MP3 player. The Dynamic Normalizer feature automatically uniforms the sound volume of each recorded track to a listenable level. Overall this is yet another attempt from Sony to get back in the MP3 player market, alongside the o so popular iPod series.

Are they mistaken?? it's a huge error if they are! Anyone know? would be quite good if there was a slot for 2GB Memorystick Duo! Or is it refering to the fact that you can connect a memory card to the Unit using the card reader connected via the USB connector at the back?

This Sony japanese site says something about MD to Walkman. Have used Google to translate, but it is not clear what they mean.

http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Product/Mz-rh1...lery/index.html

Also says level meter is visible on playback (think this has been verified in MDfreaks Videos) and that the display is on a slight incline for good visibility from the top of a hifi ;)

dlmag.com has probably mixed this up with a Sony Ericsson walkman phone, and the article never mentions MD.

A 2Gb slot for a Memory Stick it would be a great feature, but i don´t think the RH1 carry it, cause just now uses MD tech, so, It´s possible to have some kind of memory for antishock or continuous recording among MD changes, but ¿2gbs internal? That makes no sense in a MD device. MD is a recorder, not a Mp3 portable player wannabe.

Question: ¿MD recorders like RH1 with gigas of memory for mp3 playback its the ultimate audio device for both portable record and play quality music?

And more ¿Anyone know what are the stand for the RH1? I haven´t seen it.

That would be easier but for those who don't use the "on the fly" swap of batteries it would only make the unit larger than neccessary.

A few millimeters larger than "necessary." But the unit is smaller than necessary for many of us now, since we need to be able to swap batteries while recording in the field, and some of us need to be able to title recordings and therefore want a jog dial.

For live/field recording, the machine could be 50% larger and still be plenty small enough. At twice the size--still tiny--it could hold multiple batteries and enough flash memory to allow you to swap discs in the field. Remember when people used to lug around Sony cassette recorders? I don't need my hardware to be the size of a postage stamp to consider it "small enough."

So what's the best place in Japan to import from these days then? I'm in the states.

Yep that's what I was wondering. I'm sure I've read on this site a year or two ago that there was a well known and trusted exporter from Japan for MD units!?

.....Yeah that Google translation thing is hilarious! :)

Sony may be targeting this unit largely at those who do live recording, but that is a relatively small subset of the larger market. Sony wants that larger market, so it can't simply make the RH1 larger to give it the battery power or battery swapping capability that would make the field recording folks happier.

Why not? Fashion. Smaller is 'hip' or 'cool' or whatever you want to call it. Larger is not hip. You can thank Steve Jobs and the iPod for that.

What Sony might have done was to make a unit the size of the RH1 with one side of the case that could be removed and replaced with a battery pack of some sort, which would give longer run time and also power the unit while swapping the internal battery. Then if you really want either feature you can have it, while those who would rather have a smaller unit would also be happy. There could even be various sizes of battery packs that might take AAs or NiMH or other batteries, to suit everybody. Too bad developing such a thing would cost more money than Sony would likely be willing to spend.

im guessing that the mp3's will still have to go thru sonicstage...

There´s been no direct response to this yet - probably because it´s no question.

So I´ll ask:

Do MP3 files have to go through Sonicstage, and if, does it alter them? Or would it be possible to just (down?)load MP3 files via USB to the device?

Another question, mostly because of my ignorance (only owning an MZ-R900), can ATRAC files be stored on the PC, and if, can they be retransfered to an MD, without SonicStage? (Especially with regard to RH1.)

- data can be transfered with drag-n-drop (but music files transfered like this can't be played on the recorder)

- all playable music files need to go through SS or Simple Burner (which uses SS)

Yes, all music goes through sonicstage. Mp3's are *not* altered, but must be transfered through sonicstage. And yes, files can be stored on the PC, both .omg (atrac sonic stage) and .mp3, and be transfered freely between the pc and the disc, through sonicstage.

In short, all music, to or from the disc, goes through sonicstage, period. Mp3's will remain unaltered through this process.

Thanks for the info. Too bad no direct transfer is allowed, but I guess that was to be expected. Perhaps a later model will be able to...

I guess there is not much chance Sony will release an updated RH1 or a firmware-upgrade any time soon, right? Otherwise I´d guess most here would wait, instead of deciding to buy one.

but as there is no more DRM/limitations with SS3.4 it is not a problem...

2 months and counting but not holding my breath.

Sony Australia has a substantial record of not meeting release dates.

The problem is, they've already lost that market.

I just (last week) found a homemade wooden crate with 75 MDs and a smashed player, in a trashpile three blocks from my house. That's over $100 of media just sitting on the curb, not even worth posting to craigslist or freecycle.

I gotta say, I'm happy to have a year's supply of media for my new RH1. But any mainstream player market for MD really is dead.

Not that it matters much, but anyone know where the RH1 is made in? Btw, im starting to like the look more, especially when compared to ipods and such. Might convince myself enough to buy one, since im now tired of the PSP, MD is just superior in terms of music playback and recording. Just my 0.02.

now if sony would make a program that could fit on a md with hi-md formating and that can manage transfer of mp3s...

They need to make it a UMS fiiletree drag and drop for music aswell as data. Then you'd need no software at all and it would work across Mac/Unix and PC. You can argue the DRM issue for music downloads. But I reckon only a tiny fraction of Sonys MP3 device buyers use an online store to buy music. To be honest they should be promoting CD's as a better medium than low bitrate music downloads.

hey guys

i will be flying to japan in a month through seol, korea.

where would be a better place to look up for the rh1?

will it be out by then?

RH1 will be available on and after 21 April in Japan. List price is Yen39800 and while street price is still unclear, some smaller retailers (i.e., WEB-based on-line retailers) offer Yen35000, which is equivalent to approx. US$302.00, as of this writing and is probably going down further towards the end of this month.

If you're coming to Tokyo, I'd recommend duty-free section of LAOX in Akihabara.

what would be the ideal solution :ok:

but if that cant happen, having a app that can run from a md and manage the transfer of mp3's to and from the discs would be a nice substitute...

Have you found anyone willing to import the device to the U.S.? Minidisco.com told me to hang-tight, but I just cant seem to do so!
