  1. not true! if you cut the ribbon cable on the unit then try to erase the dick the laser will heat the md surface which will auomaticly erase the disk then the magnetic head will be missing so you will have no new data written to the disk. this will cause the disk to be blank i have done it before. maybe someone on the forum can try this on their broken unit to verify it really does erase the disk. i installed a new record head on the unit i cut the cable on so i cant do it again.
  2. yea i know i have 250 disks made that way and its a pain in the ass compared to the easy way of usb transfer. using the optical you dont even get track titles! i wouldnt even bother if it didn't sound so good.
  3. from the reviews it sounds like this thing would be real pain in the ass to use!!
  4. if the ribbon cable was bad it will still erase the disk! i had a bad ribbon cable on 2 of my units before . it erases the disk but cant re-write it. put the disk in and hook up the usb check to see if sonic stage will allow you to rename a track. if not the write protect tab indicator in the unit is broken or struck.
  5. i know how to fix this. in windows task manager set the priority for the hi md renderer program to high. the default is normal. this will cause the program to have more processor time which gets the timing right for the track marks between songs!
  6. yes the sp thing is a mess if we could transfer real sp to the disks from the computer that would be awesome..... sony really does suck!
  7. after version 3.4 they removed the 105k bitrate for hi-md transfers. i use it all the time you can get 6hrs 15 mins on 1 standard disk reformatted to hi-md. it is not the highest quality but it is very good for non hi-fi listening
  8. lithium ion batteries will only charge in a certain temperature range. are you sure the battery and the unit are at room temperature?
  9. you may have your unit set to add automatic track marks. if so just turn the auto track marks off.
  10. i have heard of people using usb battery boxes for power and charging.
  11. hey i was just messing around with some md's in my hand over the weekend and i just noticed the shutter can be opened very easily just by using 2 disks and turning one upsidedown and sliding it down over the other one pushing the shutter open. it was so simple i was surprised i never did it before. i have never heard anyone mention it. sometimes if you want to open a disk to clean it or to see if its dirty it can be a pain in the ass!
  12. what were you looking to get for it?
  13. do you still have the old broken 510 deck. i need one for parts?
  14. i also have a n510. i like it a lot and use it all the time!
  15. see if you can just run the unit with the remote!
  16. maybe it would be cheaper to get a remote with a display on it!
  17. i have a standard md with screws holding it together from tdk. it would be easy to take apart and place a hi-md inside. i should try it!
  18. you could try attaching a wire from the metal case to the negative battery terminal. if just touching the wire fixes the hum they you could get someone to solder it permanently for you.
  19. you cant just download and install a driver! you need to download sonic stage and then install that. just make sure you uninstall the driver you already installed first. then install sonic stage!
  20. try the unit outside or at another location. maybe there is a source of noise in the area you are trying to use the unit at.
  21. its not really that they cant be pre recorded but just they cant be stamped like a regular cd or a regular md. they would have to actually be recorded then sold. this would be very time consuming!
  22. maybe you could build your own battery pack and plug it into where the power cord goes?
  23. you can only erase hi-md formatted disks on units without the computer that are very old and dont understand the to look for the track protect bit. if not you need to use a net md unit and erase them on the computer. my old deck from 1996 will erase them.
  24. i have all my recordings on sp disks and use hi md for portable listening. lp2 does not sound quite good enough for me. the 192k on hi-md sounds awesome and is very good for listening in any environment,
  25. i have been thinking about something similar for a while now. maybe a company (not sony) could design and build it. kind of like hi-md rendered created by marc in this forum. it is an awesome program for uploading ned md and its not from sony!
